Blackcomb Opening Day

For my third day on the hill, (damn I got to catch up) the plan was to shred Blackcomb for opening day but the crew and I headed up Whistler and it was so sweet we decided to not rush and enjoy the the fact that there was sunny skies, fresh pow and no one on the mountain.

We ended up heading over to Blackcomb and hitting up 7th Heaven, Whistler had better conditions but it was still sweet.

Olympic Torch Relay Video -Halifax Stop

I was lucky enough to head to Halifax and take part of the Olympic Torch Relay on Nov. 18th., Mike Martinet and I covered our first stop of the Torch Relay for Sympatico.ca and Bell. I feel the first video went really well and I am looking forward to heading back to my home turf next week to cover the Montreal stop.

I was really looking forward to having some fresh Lobster but was pretty bummed when I realized we’d be working the whole time and wouldn’t have any time for a decent dinner. But after checking my bags at the airport I came across a huge tank of Lobsters and was able to fly some live ones home, so I picked up two Lobsters for Sarah and I. I ended up getting in pretty late but was able to feast around midnight, it was well worth the wait.

Westbeach 30th Anniversary Heritage Project Video # 3 – “Summer Camps”

The Westbeach snowboarding brand’s 30th Anniversary Heritage Project is in full swing with this weeks commercial release of “Out West: Snowboarding, Westbeach, and a New Canadian Dream”, a soft cover book by Dano Pendygrasse.

This week the Heritage Video series continues with the 3rd video release “Summer Camps” by underexposed Agency Ltd. The video features historic glacier shrd footage,Camp of Champs tales, and shows the evolution of snowparks, fashion and the progression of snowboarding. Lenny Rubenovitch & Brian Hockenstein collaborated with different OG filmmakers/photogs that were supportive of the project, went deep into the vaults, and have been able to re-release historic footage and images chronicling the growth of our subculture.

New, never seen before interviews from shred veterans Kevin Sansalone, Kale Stephens, Chris Brown, JP Walker, Ken Achenbach, and others offer insight into what the summer shred is all about.

To celebrate Westbeach’s 30th anniversary they have created “The Heritage Project”

Westbeach has hired Dano Pendygrasse to put together a photo-book and myself to produce a handful of webisodes. Below you can check out #1 which is a Teaser and sample of what is to come. The shorts to follow will cover the Westbeach Classic, Summer Camps, Fashion and another one on wherever the production takes my crew and I.

To accompany the Book and the Webisodes, Westbeach has put a Heritage blog online which will be continually releasing content over the Heritage project.

It has been an experience digging into the archives of snowboarding’s past, we have done a few interviews with some of Canada’s snowboard forefathers and Im looking forward to doing a handful more.

This Project has been a huge collaborative effort and I want to thank everyone who has helped to make it possible.

The teaser features a fair share of footage from some of Murray Siple’s snowboard films. If you are unfamiliar with Murray, he was one of the original Canadian Snowboard filmmakers at a time where there weren’t that many. Tragically he got into a car accident that paralyzed him from the waist down and he has not been able to make snowboard films since 96. But recently in 2008 he finished “Carts of Darkness“. Murray’s feature-length documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts down the steep hills of North Vancouver.

It’s a sweet film and guess what, its free, online on the NFB website and is good quality. If you havent seen it, grab a beer enable fullscreen and sit back and enjoy. Its 59 mins long.

The Festival and mayhem is just about to kick off. I put together some snaps and info on the First annual Art barn Open for Push along with a story and some pics of the Skate and Deploy event.

I flew back home at the beginning of April to chill out with the folks and some friends and cover the Shakedown. I worked with Light box Films boys out of Quebec, We have put togtehr two videos, one on the 1st day which covers qualification and Railjam and the 2nd which covers the Push.ca halftime show, more qualifying and the finals.

Grenade Games is rolling into town and Ill be writing daily news posts for Push.ca.
